Notice of Pesticide Application *YELLOW JACKET PHEREMONE TRAPS*

Posted Date: 4/04/25 (11:15 PM)

Yellow Jackets are a pest of concern at all 4J schools, especially elementary schools. To reduce the incidence of stings, the need for hazardous nest removal, or the use of pesticide, pheromone traps are set to preemptively reduce populations before nesting sites are established.

Yellow jacket traps contain a food-grade aromatic attractant. They do not contain pesticides, but are considered a pesticide by ODA and 4J is required to provide the same notice and postings as for other pesticide applications. Traps pose no hazard to people, pets or wildlife when installed and used properly. Traps will remain year round, but the attractant added each spring will evaporate within approximately 2 months. These traps do not significantly impact insect species other than yellow jackets.

Please note: It is 4J’s policy to minimize the use of pesticides by implementing Integrated Pest Management practices. Pesticides (including herbicides) are used only after other means of control have proven ineffective, impractical or pose a greater risk to students or staff. By law, any pesticide applied at schools must meet State of Oregon “low impact” criteria; may only be applied by a licensed applicator; and only with the approval of 4J Facilities Management.

This notice is required in accordance to ORS 634.740 and must be provided to all staff, faculty, adult students, parents or guardians of minor students. It is the responsibility of the site primary contact (listed above), or their designee, to communicate this notice in the most effective manner to reach the intended recipients.

Any school that will receive the application will be indicated by a sign bearing the words: “Warning: Pesticide-Treated Area”, the expected or actual date and time for the application and provide the telephone number of a contact person. Sign(s) will remain for a minimum of 72 hours after the application. The IPM Coordinator or a designee shall place the labeling information and material data safety sheet for the pesticide in the school’s Pest Log. Pest control and pesticide use records are maintained at 4J Facilities as well.
