Hello, Churchill families and students;
Happy New Year!!! Hard to believe that we are already a week into 2023, and getting closer to being almost halfway done with the school year. I hope that you had a restful end to your 2022, and are looking forward to the new and exciting times to come in 2023.
At school, we are entering into the “marathon” time of school – the days between now and Spring Break. Lots of events will be happening at school, classes and teachers will be in full swing, winter sports are happening, the weather is sometimes rainy and dark (or maybe everyday is like that…), and we won’t have too many breaks between now and the end of Trimester 2, which occurs the week before Spring Break. Needless to say, this is a fun and busy time of year, but it will be great!

Plus, there is lots happening in our College and Career Center, as well as with our School-to-Career office. Seniors, be on the look out for LEAP interviews starting at the end of January, and other important graduation information.

Taking Care of School Laptops
The 4J Technology Department is reporting a significant amount of preventable damage to student laptops. We’d like to remind everyone of the importance of taking good care of these devices. The money that we save on repairing or replacing student technology can be used to better serve our students and school communities.
The safest place to use and store the laptop is on a flat, clear, stable surface like a table or desk. Keep your laptop away from pets, young children, and areas where there is a lot of activity or foot traffic.
Be very careful with your backpack when you are using it to transport your laptop. Avoid hard landings when you are setting your backpack down. NEVER leave your backpack unattended. Keep it with you or store it in a locker to keep it safe.
Keep all fluids and food (including gum, toothpaste, etc.) at least 6 feet away from the laptop at all times.
If liquid is spilled on the laptop, do not try to fix it yourself. The best thing to do is immediately contact the school to set up an exchange.

Schedule Changes
The last day to drop a class without a withdrawal (WD) on your transcript is this upcoming Tuesday, January 10th at 3:00 pm. Contact your counselor before this date if you need to drop a class. Any requests made after the deadline will require withdrawal paperwork and will result in a “WD” on your transcript.

In Eugene School District 4J, every school offers an excellent education for our students. Students may enroll in their neighborhood school at any time, or may request to enroll in a different 4J school provided there is space available. School choice requests will be accepted in an order determined by lottery.
To be included in the lottery, 4J residents must apply by January 31 at midnight. Non-district residents must apply between March 1 and 31. All students who want to obtain a transfer must apply, including new incoming siblings and students who have moved out of our school neighborhood or the district and want to remain enrolled next year.
Virtual and in-person school visits are scheduled in the month of January. If you have any friends or family members who are considering school choice, please invite them to learn more about our wonderful school and their school choice options!

En el Distrito Escolar de Eugene 4J, cada escuela ofrece una excelente educación para nuestros alumnos. Los alumnos pueden matricularse en la escuela de su vecindario en cualquier momento, o pueden solicitar matricularse en otras escuelas de 4J, siempre y cuando haya puestos disponibles. Eugene International High School (IHS) School Choice Sessions
Eugene International High School (Eugene IHS) is a choice school for students in grades 9-12 offering a 4-year interdisciplinary humanities curriculum focused on international studies. Students spend two class periods each school day in their IHS classes and the other three class periods in host school classes.
ANY student can enroll. All interested students must fill out an online 4J School Choice application, regardless of attendance area: www.4j.lane.edu/choice. The in-district deadline is January 31, 2023.

Spanish and French Immersion students from Monroe and Roosevelt will be enrolled in Eugene IHS without the lottery process because they entered immersion through the lottery in elementary or middle school. However, immersion students do need to submit the Eugene IHS Enrollment Form to the Eugene IHS office at South or Sheldon by the January 31st deadline. This form will be included in a special mailing to immersion families.
Eugene IHS will hold special 8th-grade parent information nights: Please join us for any of the special information nights to learn more about our exciting school. The presentations will be the same each night. Please attend any night you can.

Neurodiversity Affinity Groups Starting in Eugene 4J High Schools

In partnership with The Arc Lane County and a grant from the Oregon Health Authority, The Eugene 4J School District will form affinity groups for students who experience disabilities.
The goal of the affinity groups is to create a safe space for students to connect and invite student allies to promote acceptance and foster friendships.
The Mind Body Divergence Alliance meetings will be held during lunch at on the following days:
- Every Friday starting Jan 6 at Churchill High School group
- Every Monday starting Jan 9 at South Eugene High School
- Every Tuesday starting Jan 10 at Sheldon High School
- Meetings at North Eugene High School are to be determined

Registration is Open for Uplift Events for Students
Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 Uplift by Youth Era events. Uplift is a live, trauma-informed, virtual summit for teens (14-19). Participants will join youth from around the world to master their mental health, learn how to support their friends and how to build community. Uplift is 100% virtual and completely free for Oregon high school students thanks to funding through the Oregon Health Authority. The 4-day training happens outside of school hours, typically during school breaks, and requires no demands on teachers’ limited time. Students earn a $75 stipend for participation and chances to win lots of prizes.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) will be given to interested high school students at least 16 years old. The test is on Wednesday, February 15th, 2022. 1:00–3:30 pm. Registered students will be excused from class with a permission slip. Students will need to bring their student computer to take the test. I recommend that students taking the test have taken math at least through Algebra II, but it is not required. Test preparation materials can be accessed at this link, in the counseling hallway, or on the table outside the School-to-Career office in the STEM building.

Pre-College Mentors at CHS
We are fortunate to have SAIL (Summer Academy to Inspire Learning) pre-college mentors on our campus. They can help students research colleges and scholarships, fill out applications, answer questions about what college is like, register for standardized tests, and much more. They will be located in the College & Career Center. Students can see them on a drop-in basis (schedule below) or arrange to have a set time to meet with them regularly.

The Oregon Promise Application is now open. The Oregon Promise is funding from the State of Oregon that helps students pay tuition at any Oregon Community College. The application is not long or time-consuming, although students must fill out the FAFSA or ORSAA to be considered. We recommend that students fill out the Oregon Promise application even if going to a community college is not their first choice. We don’t want you to miss deadlines! Volunteers are needed for the College and Career Center. If you have a spare hour or two a week to help us, consider joining our team. Do you just love managing data and spreadsheets? We need you. Are crafts your thing? We need you too. Are you good at coordinating programs and reaching out to community members? We need a community service coordinator. Does writing make you smile? We need someone to write posts for social media, announcements, emails, etc. Need a flexible schedule? Some tasks can be done entirely remotely. But, if you want to immerse yourself in our active campus, you are welcome. Would you rather help us on an as-need basis? Yep, we always need extra hands.

LEAP Interviews begin Monday, January 23rd
For those seniors who are intending to complete the LEAP through work experience, you will need to complete the LEAP packet of activities and schedule a LEAP interview with Mary Beth or your counselor during the week of January 23rd-January 27th. For those seniors who are not doing work experience as an option but have already completed an independent option plus the packet, you are welcome to schedule an appointment, also.

This event is FREE and open to youth interested in marketing, branding, design, and business. Register in teams of up to five or as an individual to be paired with a group. Winter Job Shadows!
The registration window is open now through January 23rd. Job shadows will take place in February. This is a great, short-term opportunity for all high school students to explore new careers. Find out more here
Summer Internships
Spend time this summer gaining valuable PAID experience working with local companies. High school juniors and seniors can apply for a 200-hour summer internship in the career area of their interest. Application Window: Feb 20 – Mar 30 6-Week paid internship at a local company for High School students in 11th & 12th grade. This makes a super LEAP project for current juniors. Registration information and link will be coming in February.

City of Eugene Teen Empowerment Programs
Check out the City of Eugene Teen Empowerment Programs! (printable PDF below).
Offered to all interested youth and teens. All are FREE of charge and offer snacks. Registration opens at 9:00 am on December 13 to participate in these free programs taking place from January through April. Space is limited, so sign up early!
Programs collaborate with community partners to provide free low barrier, inclusive, out-of-school-time recreation and enrichment activities for youth. Experiential project-based activities empower teens by building life and job skills, offering access to peer and adult mentors, and participating in community service opportunities.
